Social Value Quality Mark CIC has introduced a new ‘Impact Assured’ mark, providing independent assurance of an organisation’s social value claims. It comes at a time when there is enhanced focus on both authorities and suppliers to demonstrate that activities and claims are legitimate.

There is a growing concern particularly within the public procurement space about ‘value washing’ – a concept akin to ‘greenwashing,’ where organisations make deceptive claims about their social impact. This takes many forms, from double counting to failing to give appropriate credit to third parties involved in the creation of value. Less scrupulous organisations may also report only positive impacts while hiding or downplaying the negatives.

These kinds of practices will face enhanced scrutiny under the new Public Procurement Act, placing an onus on suppliers to be transparent in their claims. Local Authorities will also have to show they have applied due diligence when making purchasing decisions, otherwise they may leave themselves open to penalties.

Richard Dickins, MD, Social Value Quality Mark CIC says: “As an organisation we exist to promote the highest standards of values-led business. We believe that organisations who are genuinely spreading a positive impact deserve to stand out for the difference they make to their customers and communities.

“But knowing how to evidence an authentic claim – and how to verify this evidence – is a common challenge.”

One such way to provide evidence is through Social Value Quality Mark accreditation – the UK’s national standard in social value. The SVQM provides independent assurance of an organisation’s processes, behaviours and delivery when it comes to social value. There are four levels of award, ranging from Bronze to Platinum to reflect the awardee organisation’s level of maturity and quality of evidence.

The Impact Assured mark is a new offering from SVQM which complements accreditation and is based on an audit process. It checks for transparency in the delivery and reporting of social value commitments.

“Suppliers and procurement teams can now draw on our expertise when it comes to auditing and fact checking social value claims,” continues Richard. “The Impact Assured mark provides a visible mark of credibility and trust.”

Suppliers are audited to confirm that social value commitments have been met in line with contractual obligations, verified evidence, and compliance with the Public Procurement Act 2023.

The service can be commissioned by suppliers or procurement teams. For more information email admin@socialvaluequalitymark.com or call 0345 017 97 67.
